Thermal Pools, sand flies and missing Penguins!

Feb 17 -18th
On the way over from Kaikoura to Hamner Springs we came over a rickety looking bridge where a remarkably relaxed lady was being “dressed” for a bungy jump into the deep gorge below. We watched with interest as she jumped and heard her screams! Thankfully she was fine.

Would you jump from this bridge?

What have Bath, Cheltenham, Leamington and Harrogate got in common? The answer, obviously, is that they are all streets in the Spa town of Hamner Springs in the South Alps, South Island. Yesterday we swapped whale watching for thermal pools – such a varied country! Spent a relaxing few hours in thermal pools ranging from a coolish (it’s all relative) 36 degrees to a very pleasant 42 degrees. Rained today and rather cloudy so good to get some heat in another way.

Drove about 220 Kilometres yesterday through amazing scenery in the Lewis Pass and Victoria Forest. Lots of bumpy bits, huge valleys and rivers. However probably wasn’t as dramatic as in wetter weather as it’s so dry here at the moment that most of the rivers and creeks are very low.

Morning cloud over the mountains near Hamner Springs

Stopped overnight at a very nice site just yards from a beach where blue penguins nest. Spent a happy hour or so at dusk on the beach hoping that we’d see some penguins appear from the sea but unfortunately our only entertainment was some drunken fishermen! Also got caught out by the vicious sand flies from the beach. We’d been warned but had forgotten quite how itchy their bites can be.
